When Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer?
One of the first things couples ask after securing their wedding venue is:
“When should we actually book our photographer?”
It’s a fair question.
Book too early and you might wonder if you’ve rushed into a decision.
Leave it too late and you start worrying that all the photographers you like will already be booked.
The truth is, there’s no perfect time.
After photographing weddings across Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, I’ve seen couples book nearly two years in advance, while others have booked just a couple of months before their wedding. Both ended up with beautiful wedding days.
What matters most isn’t following a timeline.
It’s finding the right photographer for you.
Why Some Couples Book So Early
Once your wedding date is confirmed, every supplier becomes available to book.
For many couples, photography is one of the first things they tick off the list.
The reason is simple.
Unlike some suppliers, your photographer can only photograph one wedding each day. Once that date has been booked, it’s no longer available.
If you’ve already found someone whose work you genuinely love, it often makes sense to secure them rather than hoping they’ll still be free a few months later.
There Isn’t One “Correct” Time
One thing I’ve learnt is that every wedding is different.
Some couples book their venue two years in advance.
Others organise an entire wedding within six months.
Weekday weddings often have more flexibility than summer Saturdays.
Winter weddings can have different availability compared to peak season.
That’s why I try not to give a one-size-fits-all answer.
Instead, I’d say this:
Once you’ve booked your venue and you’re confident you’ve found the photographer who feels right for you, don’t wait simply because you think you should.
What If You’ve Left It Later Than You Planned?
First of all…
Don’t panic.
I’ve received enquiries only weeks before a wedding, and sometimes I’ve been available.
I’ve also had dates booked well over a year in advance.
You simply don’t know until you ask.
If your wedding isn’t far away, it’s worth contacting photographers sooner rather than later. Even if your first choice isn’t available, they can often recommend someone whose style is similar.
Don’t Book Because You Feel Pressured
This is probably the biggest piece of advice I can give.
Don’t book a photographer because everyone says you need to get one booked immediately.
Book them because you’ve found someone whose work makes you feel something.
Someone you trust.
Someone you can imagine spending most of your wedding day with.
Photography is about far more than availability.
It’s about finding someone whose approach fits your day.

What Happens Once You’ve Booked?
Many couples think booking their photographer is the end of the process.
In reality, it’s just the beginning.
Over the months leading up to your wedding you’ll usually chat about timelines, group photographs, locations and all the little details that help the day run smoothly.
If you’re wondering what happens next, I’ve written another blog that explains exactly what to expect.
Final Thoughts
If you’re wondering when to book your wedding photographer, my advice is actually quite simple.
Book when you’ve found the person you genuinely want to photograph your wedding.
Yes, booking earlier often gives you more choice.
But choosing the right photographer will always matter more than simply choosing the quickest one.

FAQs
How early should I book my wedding photographer?
As soon as you’ve booked your venue and found a photographer whose style and approach you love. Popular dates can book up well in advance, but it’s always worth asking about availability.
Is it too late to book a wedding photographer six months before the wedding?
Not necessarily. While some photographers will already be booked, others may still have availability, especially for weekday or off-season weddings.
Should I book my venue before my photographer?
Yes. Your wedding date and venue usually come first, as photographers need both to confirm their availability.
What if my preferred photographer is already booked?
Ask if they can recommend someone with a similar documentary style. Photographers often have trusted colleagues they can suggest.
