What Questions Should You Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before Booking?
Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make while planning your wedding.
Long after the cake has been eaten, the flowers have gone and the music has stopped, your photographs will be one of the few things that remain.
So it’s completely normal to have questions.
The problem is, when you first start meeting photographers, it’s easy to focus on the obvious things.
How much do you charge?
How many hours are included?
Have you photographed our venue before?
Those are all good questions, but in my experience they’re rarely the ones that tell you whether a photographer is the right fit for you.
After photographing weddings across Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, I’ve learnt that the best conversations aren’t just about photographs.
They’re about understanding how your photographer works, how they’ll fit into your day and, ultimately, how they’ll help you enjoy one of the biggest days of your life.
Here are the questions I think are really worth asking.
What’s Your Photography Style?
This is probably the best place to start.
Every photographer works differently.
Some photographers direct almost every part of the day, carefully posing couples throughout.
Others take a much more documentary approach, quietly observing what’s happening and capturing genuine moments as they naturally unfold.
Neither style is right or wrong.
The important thing is finding someone whose approach matches how you want your wedding day to feel.
If the thought of spending hours posing makes you uncomfortable, don’t ignore that feeling.
Your wedding should never feel like a photoshoot.
Instead, choose someone whose work reflects the experience you’re hoping to have.

Can We See a Full Wedding Gallery?
Instagram is brilliant for discovering photographers.
But remember…
Instagram is a highlights reel.
Every photographer shares their favourite photographs.
A full wedding gallery tells a completely different story.
It shows how they photograph an entire wedding day, from the excitement of the morning preparations right through to the evening celebrations.
It also shows consistency.
Can they photograph:
- bright sunshine?
- dark ceremony rooms?
- rainy afternoons?
- evening dancing?
- emotional moments?
- large family groups?
Beautiful photographs are important.
Consistently telling the story of an entire wedding day is even more important.
How Much Direction Do You Give?
This is one of the questions I wish more couples asked.
Some photographers love directing every moment.
Others give very little direction at all.
Personally, I think most couples sit somewhere in the middle.
They don’t want to spend all day posing.
But they also appreciate a little guidance when it’s needed.
Ask your photographer how they approach:
- couple portraits
- family photographs
- group shots
- confetti
- natural moments
Understanding how they work gives you a much better idea of what your wedding day will actually feel like.
What Happens If Our Wedding Runs Late?
Here’s a secret.
Almost every wedding runs a little differently to the original timeline.
Hair and makeup takes longer.
Guests arrive late.
Speeches overrun.
The weather changes.
That’s completely normal.
A good photographer won’t panic when things don’t go exactly to plan.
Instead, they’ll adapt.
Ask your photographer how they handle changes during the day.
Their answer will tell you a lot about their experience and how calm they’ll remain if something unexpected happens.
Have You Photographed Our Venue Before?
This is one of the most common questions photographers are asked.
And it’s completely understandable.
But personally, I don’t think it’s the deciding factor many couples believe it is.
A photographer who understands light, can adapt to different surroundings and knows how to work in changing conditions should be able to create beautiful photographs wherever your wedding takes place.
Some of my favourite weddings have been at venues I’d never photographed before.

What’s Included After the Wedding?
It’s easy to focus on the wedding day itself.
But don’t forget to ask what happens afterwards.
Questions like:
- When will we receive our gallery?
- Approximately how many photographs should we expect?
- How will our photographs be delivered?
- Do you offer albums?
- How long are our photographs backed up?
Knowing exactly what happens after your wedding helps you feel confident about your investment and avoids any surprises later.
Do We Actually Get On?
This might sound like an unusual question.
But I honestly think it’s one of the most important.
You’ll spend a large part of your wedding day with your photographer.
They’re there while you’re getting ready.
They’re there before the ceremony.
They’re often nearby during some of the most emotional moments of the day.
If conversation feels easy, if you feel relaxed around them and if they put you at ease, that’s a very good sign.
Some of the nicest feedback I’ve ever received hasn’t been about the photographs themselves.
It’s couples telling me:
“We forgot you were even there.”
For me, that’s one of the biggest compliments I can receive.
Final Thoughts
There are plenty of questions you can ask a wedding photographer.
But don’t get too caught up trying to ask the “perfect” questions.
Instead, focus on finding someone whose work you genuinely connect with, whose personality puts you at ease and whose approach fits the kind of wedding day you’re hoping to have.
Beautiful photographs are important.
But so is the experience of having them taken.
Years from now, you probably won’t remember every conversation you had with your photographer.
You’ll remember whether you felt relaxed.
Whether you enjoyed yourselves.
Whether you were able to simply be present and enjoy one of the biggest days of your life.
For me, that’s what choosing the right wedding photographer is really about.

For example:
- Do you work with a second photographer?
- Do you offer engagement shoots?
- How do you organise family group photographs?
- Can you recommend other wedding suppliers?
- How do you back up our photographs?
- What happens if you’re ill on the day?
- Can we order wedding albums later?
- How do you help couples who don’t enjoy having their photograph taken?
- Will you help us plan our photography timeline?
- Do you travel throughout the UK?
Not every question will apply to every wedding.
The important thing is feeling comfortable enough to ask them.
A good photographer should never make you feel like you’re asking too much.

They’ll help you feel comfortable.
They’ll adapt when plans change.
They’ll blend into your day when needed and step in with gentle guidance when it helps.
Most importantly, they’ll tell the story of your wedding in a way that feels true to you.
