There are some assignments you walk into with a brief…
and then there are the ones where you walk in with absolutely no idea what is about to unfold.
Earlier this month, I was invited to photograph a completely secret Netflix production in Newark — a surprise created for a superfan of Bridgerton ahead of its new season launch on Netflix.
What I witnessed — and documented — was one of the most carefully orchestrated and emotionally charged reveals I’ve ever photographed.
A “training day” that clearly wasn’t a training day
From the moment I arrived at Newark Town Hall, the scale of the production became immediately clear.
The ballroom — usually an elegant historic venue — had been completely transformed into a Regency-era scene.
Gold and red drapery, period styling, floral details and a fully dressed set turned the space into something straight out of the Bridgerton world.
This wasn’t just a small promotional shoot.
It was a full immersive experience — and nobody arriving was supposed to know.
As a photographer, I’m usually looking for light, angles and moments.
Here, I also had to be invisible.
Everything depended on the surprise landing perfectly.
Photographing the reveal
Sarah arrived believing she was attending a first aid course with her best friend.
I was positioned inside the room before she entered.
When the partition wall opened and the ballroom was revealed, the entire atmosphere changed instantly.
Shock.
Confusion.
Then absolute disbelief.
This is the kind of moment you cannot stage.
There is no direction.
No posing.
No second take.
Just one reaction — and it happens once.
From behind the camera, you’re working fast but quietly:
• tracking eye contact,
• watching hands,
• waiting for the micro-expressions that tell the real story.
For me, this is exactly what documentary photography is about — even when the setting looks like a Netflix period drama.
“Lady Sarah of County Durham”
Once Sarah was escorted into the room and introduced as Lady Sarah of County Durham, the performance, music and atmosphere continued to build.
She was guided to a red and gold throne at the centre of the ballroom.
At this point, most people in the room were holding their breath.
And then the invitation was announced — an exclusive trip to the season four premiere in Paris.
That was the moment everything broke open emotionally.
The family reveal
As powerful as the set and production were, the moment that truly mattered came next.
Sarah’s family appeared from behind her.
From a photography point of view, this is where I would stop thinking about the production entirely — and focus purely on connection, however due to the production I couldn't be positioned at the angle to capture these moments
Tears.
Hands over faces.
Instinctive movement toward each other.
It’s very similar to photographing a wedding ceremony reveal or first look — except this one had no aisle and no script.
I did however after the filming had finished managed to capture a portrait of the family sat at the throne, with their wall hung family portrait hung behind them on the wall.
A huge local effort behind the scenes
What made this project even more special was how many local organisations and businesses were involved.
The event was supported by Newark Town Council, who allowed the historic ballroom to be used for the surprise.
The spectacular three-tier cake was created by local bakery The Crumbly Bun, working to a Regency theme with almost no information about what the cake was actually for.
Even myself wasn't aware of exactly what was happening on the day apart from the knowledge of it was a Netflix
production and it was a Regency theme and was hush hush.
From a visual storytelling perspective, it was fantastic to document something that wasn’t just about a global TV show — but also about a town pulling together to create something unforgettable.

Why this mattered to me as a photographer
Although I’m best known through 3rdEyeImages for documentary wedding photography, this project sat perfectly within the same approach I use every weekend:
• real reactions
• real people
• real emotion
• and moments that only happen once
There was no control over timing.
No control over expressions.
No opportunity to repeat anything.
My role was simply to anticipate, observe and stay out of the way.
In many ways, this was one of the purest forms of documentary work I’ve been asked to photograph.
"A genuinely unforgettable assignment"
Watching Sarah experience something that had been secretly planned by her best friend — and then seeing her family appear moments later — was incredibly moving to witness from behind the camera.
It was a reminder of why I do what I do.
Not for perfectly posed images.
But for moments like this — when someone’s entire world shifts in front of your lens.
