How Long Should Your Wedding Drinks Reception Be?
How Long Should Your Wedding Drinks Reception Be?
When couples picture their wedding day, they often imagine the ceremony, the speeches and the evening party.
But one part of the day is often overlooked…
The drinks reception.
It might seem like a short break between the ceremony and your wedding breakfast, but it’s actually one of the most important parts of your wedding day.
It’s when everyone finally relaxes.
Guests chat, congratulate you, enjoy a drink and soak up the atmosphere while the excitement of the ceremony is still fresh.
As a documentary wedding photographer, it’s also one of my favourite parts of the day because so many genuine moments happen naturally.
So, how long should you allow?
The honest answer is usually around 90 minutes to two hours, but what’s more important is understanding why that time matters.
What Actually Happens During the Drinks Reception?
Many couples assume this is simply a chance for guests to have a drink while they disappear for photographs.
In reality, so much happens during this part of the day.
You’ll be congratulated by friends and family.
Guests who haven’t seen each other for years will be catching up.
Children will be running around.
Grandparents will be chatting with relatives.
People will finally begin to relax.
These are often the moments couples never get to see themselves, yet they’re some of the photographs that tell the real story of the day.
It’s Not Just About the Couple Portraits
One of the biggest misconceptions is that the drinks reception exists purely for photographs.
It doesn’t.
Yes, it’s usually when we take your family photographs and spend a little time creating some relaxed portraits of the two of you.
But those photographs shouldn’t take over your drinks reception.
Your wedding isn’t a photoshoot.
It’s a celebration.
The best timelines leave enough room for both.
Why Rushing This Part of the Day Can Be a Mistake
If your drinks reception is too short, everything starts competing for the same time.
Family photographs.
Couple portraits.
Congratulations from guests.
A quick drink.
Actually spending a few minutes together as newlyweds.
Before you know it, you’re being called in for your wedding breakfast and wondering where the last hour went.
Giving yourselves enough breathing space makes the whole day feel calmer.
It also means your photographer isn’t trying to squeeze everything into an unrealistic window of time.
Where a Second Photographer Can Really Help
If you’ve chosen to have a second photographer, this is often where they make one of the biggest differences.
While I’m spending a few minutes with you taking relaxed portraits or finishing your family photographs, a second photographer can continue documenting everything happening around the drinks reception.
The laughter.
The hugs.
Guests enjoying themselves.
Children playing.
Those natural moments don’t stop just because you’re having your photographs taken.
If you’re wondering whether a second photographer is worth considering, I’ve written another blog that explains when they can genuinely add value to your wedding.

Don’t Feel Like You Have to Speak to Every Guest
This might sound surprising…
But it’s okay if you don’t manage a long conversation with every single person during your drinks reception.
On larger weddings, it’s almost impossible.
Instead, enjoy the moment.
Spend time together.
Talk to the people you naturally come across.
The people who love you most won’t remember exactly how long they spoke to you.
They’ll remember seeing you happy.
Final Thoughts
Your drinks reception is far more than just the gap between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast.
It’s your first chance to enjoy your wedding as a married couple.
It’s where guests begin to relax, conversations flow and so many natural moments unfold without anyone thinking about the camera.
Giving yourselves enough time means you can enjoy all of that without feeling like you’re constantly being rushed from one part of the day to the next.
